Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Through Service and Advancing an Inclusive Culture

Centene observes Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 16, to honor Dr. King and his extraordinary leadership and civil rights achievements. Dr. King’s dedication to service and messages of racial equality, inclusion and social justice continues to inspire millions around the world. 

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service. Centene is dedicated to serving its communities and recognizes that its employees want to make a difference where they live and work through coordinated community service opportunities.

Centene’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) remains unwavering. Employee Inclusion Groups at Centene further foster its inclusive workplace where employees can engage in a wide range of development opportunities, including self-directed eLearnings and instructor-led webinars on a variety of DEI topics, including Unconscious Bias, Authentic Allyship, Inclusive Leadership and more.

Centene’s dedication to advancing health equity and removing barriers for its members and communities also is fundamental to the care provided to members. This belief directly aligns with Dr. King’s campaign for human rights for all people. The medical, nonprofit and community leaders who comprise the Centene Health Equity and Wellness Council demonstrate this commitment by addressing the challenge of building health equity across Centene’s various markets.

Centene also partners with national nonprofits like the National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF) to address health disparities and recommend evidence-based solutions and policies that help high-risk and minority populations. This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Meridian of Michigan, NMQF and Exact Sciences Corporation are partnering to host the Flint Community Cancer Screening and Health Fair to help support efforts to understand cancer risks in the community that may have been impacted by the water crisis. The event offers free screenings, COVID-19 and influenza vaccines for community residents to promote early detection of cancer and better health. The event is part of the Cancer Stage Shifting Initiative aligned with President Joe Biden’s Cancer Moonshot 2.0.
