Centene's health plans often work directly with some of the most vulnerable members. For a young expectant mother who is a member of Centene's Texas health plan, treatment far exceeded traditional prenatal care to address a wide range of social needs.

At the age of 16, Superior HealthPlan member Katy Moreno "felt lost and scared" after learning she was going to have a baby. Making matters worse, her newborn son, Futur, experienced health complications in the first few months that required specialized medical attention. While nearly 77 percent of teen pregnancies are unplanned, Katy had a source of support in her corner.

Superior HealthPlan stepped in to help Katy and Futur when mother and son needed it most. Superior's care teams addressed the early issues Futur faced, helping alleviate Katy's mounting concerns. With more time to focus on her infant son, Katy is now on a path to giving Futur and herself the kind of life she always dreamed about.

In this member testimonial video, see how Superior was able to set Katy up for successful parenting and establish a future career in healthcare.

Recent research suggests that implementing evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention programs and expanding access to Medicaid family planning services may reduce teen pregnancy. While these programs have merit, where we live, work, and play also greatly affects our overall health. Whether or not a neighborhood provides a safe environment, effective schools, access to high-quality healthcare, and potential for employment can all influence adolescents' choices.

With support from Superior HealthPlan, Katy and Futur are thriving. Keeping social determinants of health at the forefront of our clinical programs allow Centene and its health plans to offer the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
