Realizing Real-World Change with the Centene Center for Health Transformation™

Cutting-edge research and insights from the Centene Center for Health Transformation™ — a unique partnership between Centene, the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, and the Center for Advanced Hindsight at Duke University — is showing us new ways to effect positive change in the millions of individuals we serve.

Centene Center for Health Transformation

The Centene Center for Health TransformationTM creates an intersection between Centene’s insights on managed care and the research and evaluation expertise of the Brown School and the Center for Advanced Hindsight. By interpreting the science of behavior change and developing practical strategies and interventions that result in sustainable health behavior change, the Centene Center is positioned to improve the effectiveness of healthcare delivery while influencing positive health outcomes and reducing the economic burdens of poor health on individuals and society.

The Centene Center is currently working with Centene’s Louisiana, Missouri and Florida health plans to evaluate the impact peer coaches have on reducing childhood obesity, specifically dietary and activity habits. The Centene Center is also looking beyond the instruction that members receive about healthy behaviors to learn how neighbors, family members, and friends can influence and work together for better health outcomes.

Understanding the Disproportionate Impact of the Novel Coronavirus

Centene is a diversified healthcare enterprise founded on the belief that everyone deserves access to affordable, high-quality healthcare. While the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to emerge, current data suggest certain populations are more vulnerable to the novel coronavirus than others.

According to a recent study from APM Research Lab, African Americans are dying from the virus at nearly three times the rate of white Americans. In 42 states and Washington D.C., Hispanics/Latinos/as make up a greater share of confirmed COVID-19 cases than their share of the population. Early data also indicate dramatically disproportionate rates of infection and death among Native Americans.

Centene’s Communities Together in Health initiative engages key healthcare stakeholders — including members, providers, community leaders, nonprofit organizations, tribal governments, and government officials — to help address disparities in the healthcare system, while recommending evidence-based solutions and policies to further address health disparities across the country.

Centene and the National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF), an independent research and educational organization dedicated to ensuring high-risk racial and ethnic populations receive optimal healthcare, partnered on the "Minority and Rural Health Coronavirus Study” (MRCS) to assess the impact of COVID-19 on racial minorities and underserved communities across the country by collecting data to inform response efforts today and following participants over a five-year period to gauge long-term effects.

Centene has increased the deployment of virtual care services, also known as telehealth, virtual medicine or virtual health, as a means to maintain provider network accessibility for all members during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Next Generation of Healthcare Technology

Over time, we have employed an investment strategy targeting the best systems, products, tools, and technology designed to increase our capability to collect and analyze data and insights. Centene is not just shaping, but leading the digital transformation of healthcare. We are creating a world-class experience for stakeholders, including members, providers, and investors.

Centene’s continued success is largely due to the innovative ideas of its employees. Centene’s SPARK campaign is an innovation challenge that gives employees the opportunity to introduce ideas and solutions to better serve our members and providers.
